Skin Care For Beginners

If your wanting to start a skin care routine but feel overwhelmed by all the skin care information out there, and you feel like 10 different people are telling you to do 10 different things, here is a simple guide to a basic skin care routine for beginners.  These steps are what I believe are the necessary steps everyone should be doing and should have in their routine. 

 

Beginners should start with the essentials and then add in a new product to their routine month by month.  Focus on basic skin care before adding in serums and treatments for your targeted concerns.  The basics will do everything you need to achieve healthy skin and treatments will focus on concerns like acne, hyper-pigmentation, and fine lines.  The basic 3 step routine I'm recommending for you will cleanse off impurities, balance your skin's oil production, and will hydrate and soften your skin.

Top 3 Must Haves and Versatile Skin Steps and Products

 

1) Cleanser.  Every day your skin is exposed to pollutants, oil, sebum, dirt, and makeup.  It is most important to cleanse your skin before you go to sleep because your skin regenerates itself when your sleeping.  It is also good to clean your skin in the morning to clean off all the build-up from the night before and to start your day with a fresh start.  I would recommend using a gentle cleanser that won't irritate your skin, especially if your a beginner.  The Osea Malibu Cleansing Milk is a great gentle cleanser with a soft milky consistency.  Not only is this product gentle and nourishing, it is effective  at removing face makeup and eye makeup.    

 

2) Toner.  Even with the most gentle cleansers, sink water is still a pH 7 which is dehydrating to your skin.  Toners were invented for this reason, to balance your skin back to its natural pH level.  If you skip this step, your skin won't function properly.  When your skin is dehydrated, it gets tight and won't allow anything to leave OR come in.  This is why toning is a crucial step even though it is often skipped.  Your skin needs to be hydrated properly in order to function properly.  This allows your moisturizers and treatments to penetrate the skin and this allows them to work better.  I always recommend a hydrating gentle spray toner for beginners.  The toner I would recommend for you is the Josh Rosebrook Hydrating Accelerator.  This toner is made with organic aloe water infused with vitamins and ingredients that will hydrate, repair and sooth your skin.

 

3) Moisturizer- Moisturizers are the conditioners to your shampoos (cleansers).  You can't do one without the other.  Moisturizer's improve the skin's moisture levels and leaves the skin smooth and supple.  The purpose of moisturizers are to improve the skins texture and to lock in moisture.  The cleansing process could cause drying to the skin so it's important to add back hydration and vitamins to nourish your skin.  You can choose a moisturizer depending on your skin type but for beginners a great one to start out with is Osea Atmosphere Protection Cream.  This moisturizer works well with most skin types because it is not too thick and it won't leave your skin feeling dry and tight.  It has the perfect amount of hydration and can be used morning and night.  Makeup applies well over this cream.

  • Use a clean towel to dry your skin each time, otherwise you will reintroduce your skin to bacteria from the day before.

  • Dab your skin when you dry it with a wash cloth, don't rub or tug.  This helps keep the elasticity in your skin in tact.

  • Apply your serums and creams in a upwards motion.  Your skin can absorb products better that way.

  • Wait for your products to dry in between application.

  • Use lukewarm water on a daily basis when cleansing your skin.  You can use cold water to tighten pores, but hot water everyday can be too drying for your skin.

  • Eat healthy, take your vitamins, and drink water.

  • Be patient with results and be realistic.  Results take time.  Remember, your skin cell cycle is about 1x a month and slows down as you age.  So it can take a couple of months to see results.   

  • Consistency is the key to skin care.
