Your skins pH (potential hydration level) sits at a 5.5 on the acidic scale. Anything above or below that pH level when applied to the skin can do some serious damage. I have seen lemons, tomatoes, baking soda, yogurt, and even wine used in skin care DIYs. I can see why these ingredients seem so intriguing because they are so cheap. You probably ask yourself "Why would I invest in a brightening $80 facial serum if I could just use lemon to brighten my skin?"
Lemons contain the amazing super antioxidant, vitamin C. This ingredient brightens, evens, and tones the skin and is used in many beauty products because of its benefits. The difference between that 50 cent lemon and that $80 serum is a lot though. Lemons are extremely acidic and sit at the level 2-3 on the pH scale. Facial products that contain Vitamin C could have been derived from a lemon, but that ingredient was stabilized in the lab to become safe for the skin.
There are pro peels used at medical spas or at Dermatology offices that have peels with a pH levels this low, but they are also equipped with neutralizers that will stop the damage. This process is called "controlled damage". A pH level different from your skin's shouldn't be used at home.
